Pyrgos

The village of Pyrgos is located in the central part of Samos. It is a big village, nestled in a lush landscape, nearby the Amfilyssos river. It was named after the town of Pyrgos in western Peloponnesus, where its first settlers came from. The village is colourful with narrow cobblestone lanes, winding around traditional houses and old churches.

Worth seeing are the church of Dormition of the Holy Mother, built in 1888, the old windmill, the old Primary School building, the numerous chapels and the three caves full of splendid stalactites and stalagmites.

The main occupation of Pyrgos' residents is vine and olive growing, as well as beekeeping. The village is famous for its local products, including aromatic herbs and honey.

Traditional feasts are held every year to celebrate the religious holidays of Dormition of the Holy Mother, on August 15, and the patronal day of Saint Panteleimon, on July 27.
