Passports and Visas

To enter Greece you needs a valid passport, the EU nationals need only an ID document. The citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the USA can stay in Greece for a period of up to three months without a visa. Greek embassies provide a list of other nationalities allowed in the country without the need for visa. It includes the nationals of the European principalities of Monaco and San Marino and most South American countries. Those not on the list, such as South Africans, need a visa. The list keeps changing, though, so make sure you check with you nearest Greek Embassy of Consulate before planning your trip.
Take note of the fact that Greece will refuse entry to Somalian nationals with passports issued after January 1991 and holders of Yugoslav passports with a 'Macedonia' renewal stamp. If you arrive on a flight or boat from another EU state you will be treated as all other EU nationals and your passport will not be stamped. For other inquiries the US travelers should contact the Embassy of Greece at 2221 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington DC 20008, telephone (202) 939-5800, or Greek consulates in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco, and Greek embassies and consulates around the world. Additional information is available here.
If you are not a EU national and you wish to stay in Greece for longer than three months you should apply for a visa extension. This can be done through in major Greek cities such as Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra, Rhodes and Iraklion, at the Ypiresia Alodapon (Immigration Office). Be advised, however, that you might have to go through the minefield of bureaucracy. In other locations you can also contact the local police station in order to start your visa extension procedures. You might find the stuff there a little more cooperative too. Unless of Greek descent, visitors from non-EU member countries are currently allowed only one six-month extension to a tourist visa. Make sure you do not stay longer than allowed as you will be fined with a hefty sum upon your departure. Greek officials are implacable on this matter so no excuses, except perhaps for a doctor’s certificate stating that you were unable to leave the country, are bound to be accepted and you might even be denied to re-enter the country for some time. Greek Embassy or Consulate in your country will provide you with all necessary information.

Like most states in Europe, Summer (Daylight-Saving) Time is observed in Greece from late March to late October.  The time is shifted then forward by 1 hour;  3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+3). Tipping

There is no absolute rule for tipping in Greece but it is appreciated and customary for good service. Do check the bill to see if a gratuity charge is included in your bill.  Generally, a standard 10% tip is expected in most restaurants, though not obligatory. Most people round up a taxi fare to the nearest Euro.
