Architecture

Lesvos stands out among the Aegean islands with its unique and distinctive architecture. Beautiful and picturesque villages are built on the slopes of mountains and hills, many of them still preserving their traditional character and atmosphere intact. Most of the rural houses have two floors and are built in stone, with tile-covered roofs and facades decorated with balusters and wood-carved ornaments. Some houses have facades painted in vibrant colours, with large windows and heavy wooden front doors. Narrow alleys and stone steps wind their way among the houses. There are a lot of examples of medieval and Ottoman architecture, Byzantine churches, chapels and monasteries.
