Afalonas is located 7 km to the north of the town of Mytilini (Mytilene). It is one of the oldest villages on the island of Lesvos. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by archaeological findings in the areas Katho and Halasmata. Most of the village was destroyed by an earthquake in 1867, after which the villagers moved to a new location, closer to the beach, where they established another village, Nio Chorio (New Village), now called Panagiouda.
If you take interest in folk festival, then you should visit the local folk festival, held on the day of Holy Spirit, 51 days after the Greek Orthodox Easter. The festival take place in a place called Spathi, nearby the village.
